LPC Guidelines

The guidelines can be applied to projects that applicants are currently engaged, in or will commence. The intention is to make it easy to view current, future or completed projects through an SDGs lens. Projects may be especially developed for the Local Project Challenge, but it is not a requirement.

With already completed projects it is likely that other sustainability frameworks or criteria have been used. If you wish to enter a past project, the guidelines should be retrospectively applied.

Projects should be useful to the community/environment they impact, and contribute in some way to social, environmental or economic sustainability.

Local Project Challenge Guidelines

  1. Project Ideas submissions should indicate which Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) the project will address. Consideration of commitments in the New Urban Agenda (NUA) is desirable -but not required- when submitting a Project Idea

  2. It should be clear which SDGs goals, targets or specific New Urban Agenda commitments any fully developed Local Projects address, and how.
    • Note: If goals or targets need to be made relevant to the local context, ‘localize’ the goal, target or commitment to reflect the project context. In other words, critically reflect on the SDGs and the NUA in the setting where your project occurs, and ‘localize’ if necessary. A useful site is Local 2030, Localizing the SDGs.

  3. Projects should engage with a partner or partners. Project Ideas submissions should indicate potential partners. If fully developed, Local Projects should explain the ‘why’ and the ‘how’ of the partnership. Interdisciplinary teams are encouraged, as is working together with those the project affects.

  4. Public participation and citizen engagement feature throughout the SDGs and NUA. Any fully developed Local Project should demonstrate how this occurred.

  5. The impact of fully developed Local Projects should be assessed, acknowledged and takeaway messages developed.
