On May 28, 2014 CSUD Ph.D. Student Affiliates participated in the first ever IGERT Symposium and Poster Session held at Columbia University. The IGERT program, or the Integrative Graduate Education and Research Traineeship, is funded by the National Science Foundation and IGERT awards have been made to numerous universities in the US across many disciplines. The symposium’s keynote address, “US Federal Science Agencies: Change Agents for STEM Graduate Education”, was delivered by Dr. Richard Boone, Director of the NSF IGERT Program. CSUD Ph.D. student affiliates, Lauren Fischer, Jonas Hagen, and Danielle Petretta, all presented their work at the symposium’s poster session. The students are all members of the IGERT Program, Solving Urbanization Challenges by Design, which seeks to address the growing challenges of urbanization through a PhD program that integrates architecture, engineering and planning perspectives to focus on adaptive, ecological and resilient urban planning and design. Professor Patricia Culligan is the program’s director and Professor Elliott Sclar is a member of its executive committee.
