April 29, 2025

Alison Chetty is pursuing a PhD in Transportation Engineering at the University of Pretoria, South Africa. Her research interests include transport planning, sustainability, social equity, and tailored solutions for the Global South. She is assessing the cost and performance implications of incremental bus rapid transit system design approaches in Sub-Saharan African cities. Alison received the VREF Study Visit Grant to visit the Center for Sustainable Urban Development at Columbia’s Climate School and explore what types of approaches are being promoted for improving transit in developing economies. In April 2025, she visited Jackie Klopp to learn more about the PRISM Living Labs and build future collaborations in transport research. Alison joined the Next Gen Scholar Program and shared her knowledge on change processes and emerging models with popular transport in South African cities. She also attended the NYC DOT's 2nd Annual Equity in Motion Summit, Street Talks and Car-Free Earth Day, to learn about best practices in advancing transport equity.
